Scout Executive Minute

I’m sure you have heard many sayings about change.  “Change is constant.”  “Change is inevitable.”  There is truth to these statements but even more so is the statement that organizations that don’t change will eventually fail.  I firmly believe that we must change in order to be successful and in my first six months here we have made changes some more significant than others that will help us grow for the future.  Recently the Executive Committee made a significant change that was a financial necessity and I want to give you the details so you fully understand what prompted the change.

As part of the monthly budget revue with the officers of the council it had become apparent that the operations at Camp Verdugo Oaks were losing a significant amount of revenue each year and creating a very large financial drain on the council.  CVO is a critical part of the council’s operation and it is imperative that we keep it open and operating, so the Executive Committee started a discussion on what was the best plan of action going forward.  The decision was made that effective June 1st the full-time ranger position at Camp Verdugo Oaks is being eliminated and will be replaced by the role of a caretaker.  While the caretaker will reside in the residence at CVO and will help with the care and maintenance of the camp, the hours required are part-time and there is no monetary compensation.  To help with oversight of CVO, we have reinstituted the volunteer campmaster corps that will staff the camp on weekends and work with the units on check-in and check-out procedures.  These changes will provide significant budget relief to the council while not affecting camp operations.  This was a difficult decision and one that took months of discussion to finalize, but it is the right decision so that we can keep CVO as a viable asset to the youth of this council.  As always feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

There is an update on the Council Golf Outing.  We have moved the date of the event to Monday, October 31
st and wewill still be at Angeles National Golf Club.  A new brochure will be available soon.

The Burbank Friends of Scouting Event is this Friday, May 13th from 4:00pm to 6:30pm at De Bell Golf Course.  This is a great opportunity to invite your friends and business associates to come find out more about Scouting in the council and at the same time help raise funds to support the programs of the VHC.  For more information and to RSVP contact Maral Hindoyan at maral.hindoyan@scouting.org

The Glendale Friends of Scouting Event is Thursday, May 19th from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at the GlenArden Club.  We need your help in inviting your friends and business associates to participate and help support the VHC.  For more information and to RSVP contact me at mark.kraus@scouting.org

As always thank you for all that you do because it really does make a difference.

Register for Summer Cub Camp

I can taste summer.  Can you?

Cub Summer Camp is coming up fast.  And I Can’t Wait!

It’s hard to remember when I sent my first Cub Scout off to Summer Camp so many years ago.  I was a nervous wreck coming from a structured public school setting to a Cub Scout Camp with adult leaders who I had just met.  So let me pause for a moment answer some of those “first time” questions.

Training
Yes!  We are trained.  We are highly trained.  The adult Scouters have done the required training and above and beyond.  They are CPR and First Aid trained.  Our camps have met and exceeded national BSA Camping Standards.  Your Scouts safety (and fun) is our number one priority.  If you have any specific health or special needs questions please contact one of our Day Camp Directors.  We all have classroom experience as teachers and are highly trained in our non-Scouting lives as well.

Fun
Yes!  We will have fun.  LOTS of it.  We will sing camp songs, perform skits, play games, and learn.  Scouts will do activities based on the adventures in their handbook.  Its outdoor learning at its best.  Scouts will learn about physics by building robots, they will learn about teamwork by running obstacle courses, they will learn about nature when they care for plants.  At Resident Camp they will swim and participate in shooting sports.  At Day Camp we will have special guests to introduce them to engineering, recycling, and service to the community.

Memories
We apologize in advance for the camp songs they will sing incessantly.  The Scouts will also be filthy and exhausted.  We take pride in giving them a full camp experience.  Many families plan their vacations around Summer Cub Camps.  As Scouts grow out of the cub program they work hard to interview and train and serve as Youth Staff, passing on their knowledge and fun to the younger Cub Scouts.  Cub Camp is family.  You will see the same faces year-after-year.  You will hold these memories in your heart.
